Camera Memory - Storing Your Digital Photos

Where standard cameras store photos on film, digital cameras use memory. Although memory for digital cameras is initially more expensive than traditional film, it costs less in the long run because it is reusable.

Digital cameras use two types of memory. Cameras that are more basic and simple will come with some degree of built-in memory, which is a small image storage buffer built into the camera itself. After you fill the buffer up, you will have to download the saved images to your computer before you can take more pictures.

The second memory type is removable storage memory, which is usually found in more advanced cameras. The most popular removable storage memory types are Compact Flash cards, Sony Memory Sticks, and Smart Media Cards. When buying these types of additional photo storage for your camera, look for the storage capacity size to determine how many images you can store.

Resolution 16 MB Card 64 MB Card 128 MB Card
1 Megapixel 45 82 365
2 Megapixels 17 71 142
3 Megapixels 13 53 106
4 Megapixels 6 21 42

If you want to shoot many pictures in a single day or plan to take many days worth of photos, you should purchase more memory. If you purchase additional memory when you buy your camera, the merchant will often include a larger card at a reduced price.

Downloading Photos To Your Computer

After you've taken photos on a normal camera, you have to take your rolls of film to be developed. With a digital camera, all you have to do is connect it to your computer and download the images files directly on to your hard drive. There's no waiting.

All digital cameras come with software to download pictures to your computer. Newer computers have USB connections, which makes this process even easier.

You should make sure that you are able to connect the digital camera you plan to purchase to your computer. Some digital cameras connect with a serial cable, but most new models use a USB connection.

While megapixels, optical zoom and memory capacity are the main three features you need to know about when buying a digital camera, there are a few additional optional features that might interest you...
